Arlene Thompson and Natalia Svirshchevsky Receive 2010 CBA Scholarships
Bacon High School Seniors Intending to Major in Business Awarded $1,000 Scholarships

On June 2 the Colchester Business Association(CBA) awarded two annual scholarships to local graduating high school seniors with intentions of pursuing a business degree in college.  The two scholarships total $1,000 each. The 2010 recipients are Bacon Academy seniors Arlene Thompson and Natalia Svirshchevsky. The scholarship is used to go towards educational expenses.

"Being a part of a graduating class that is incredibly talented, I was so honored to be chosen to recieve this scholarship," said Svirshchevsky. "This award is very special to me because it comes from my own community. It's a great feeling to know that my town is supporting me and my future goals." In the fall she intends to study at the University of Connecticut in Storrs. She plans to get her bachelors in management and international business and a masters in business administration. Natalia hopes to one day be an entrepreneur. Natalia lives in Colchester with her parents and older brother, is Vice President of the Class of 2010 and enjoys tennis.

This year’s scholarships were awarded for the fourth year in a row, in honor of Loren Marvin and Donald Standish. Marvin was a founding member of the CBA that was very active in the business community throughout his lifetime. Standish was a CBA volunteer that was an integral proponent of “Shop Colchester First!” in support of the local business community. The scholarships fund is created from CBA raffles that take place at monthly member dinner meetings. Raffles prizes are donated from many CBA members.

"I thank the Colchester Business Association greatly for this scholarship I have been awarded and I am overwhelmed with gratitude," said Arlene Thompson. "This scholarship has given me a boost to follow my dreams with even more determination and make everyone I know proud."  Arlene will be attending The Lubin School of Business at Pace University in Manhattan starting in September, majoring in international management and Spanish. Arlene dreams of traveling significantly when she is older and is excited to study in New York City. She is President of her senior class, lives in Colchester with her parents and older brother, and enjoys playing the flute and the saxophone.

“Congratulations to both of this year's scholarships recipients," said Ginger Pensa, CBA Scholarship Chair. “We wish them success during their college years and hope they return one day to become prominent members of our community. Thank you so much to all the CBA members who have donated prizes and purchased raffle tickets that make these scholarships possible.”

The CBA hosts monthly dinner meetings and produces events that are designed to help promote, support and encourage business development in Colchester.  Their motto is: "Shop Colchester First!"  Many of their events focus on bringing member businesses together with the community such as the Business Showcase, Scarecrow Contest, and the Tag Sale on the Green.
